- Title
The Development of Sporting Facilities: A Case Study of East Northumberland, England, 1850-1914.
- Authors
Metcalfe, Alan
- Abstract
The paper provides an historical description of the enclosure of sporting facilities in East Northumberland. It demonstrates the importance of the larger social context and the interaction between different social groups in the creation of commercial grounds, community recreation grounds, public parks and recreation grounds. From a theoretical perspective it was found that neither social control nor hegemony encompassed the reality. However, structure and agency provided an adequate framework. The period and process was characterized by the penetration of the values of consumer capitalism.
