- Title
The Global 'Brain Drain' of Health Professionals: An Examination of Ethical Recruitment Policies.
- Authors
McSorley, Erin
- Abstract
The migration, or 'brain drain', of health professionals from developing countries has emerged as a pressing global health issue, particularly when considering the current state of international health inequities. This paper examines the trend of health worker migration and highlights the consequences of this trend for vulnerable health care systems in developing countries. Health professionals are autonomous actors in the migration process and possess the fundamental right to freedom of movement and gainful employment. Private agencies in high-income countries, however, have faced criticism regarding the ethical implications of active recruitment efforts that are initiated with little consideration for the well-being of health care systems in developing countries. Ethical recruitment policies provide a balanced approach to addressing the issues associated with the migration of health professionals, while ensuring that fundamental individual rights are protected.
