A review of methods for identifying mortality 'crises' using parish record data.
- Authors
Hinde, Andrew
- Abstract
Using information from the eighteenth century morality statistics taken from the period 1725-1774 in Hampshire, England, specifically the parishes of Aldershot and Ringwood, the article reviews quantitative methods of historical research aimed at determining which, if any years, the parishes faced mortality crises. Some of the subjects considered include standard deviations, moving averages, and the impact of mortality statistics to smaller compared to larger populations. The research methodology used in the book "The population history of England" by E. A. Wrigley and R. S. Schofield is considered.
