- Abstract
The article discusses the metaphor of body politic, clockwork state and social contract in the early modern political theory. The comparison of the three metaphors shows that they entail diverse kinds of conceptual frameworks for the explanation of political phenomena. The body politic metaphor and the clockwork metaphor were necessary in explicating the structure of the state. On the other hand, the social contract metaphor was useful in explaining and elaborating the origin of state.
