- Abstract
Eight bed covers dating from about 1800 to 1900 and made by female members of the Townsend and Pope families of the Lowcountry area of South Carolina are the focus of this study. Of these eight bed covers, seven are chintz appliqué creations; three contain album blocks, two feature medallions, one is a Tree of Life, and the other is a combination medallion/album. The eighth bed cover is an unfinished hexagon top. Museum collections hold seven of the bed covers, while the eighth remains in the family. Initially, descendants of the makers were aware of the existence of only three summer spreads, but two additional quilts and three quilt tops connected to the family―representing the work of at least four generations―have been discovered in the course of this research. Analysis of these items, including their designs, inscriptions, and fabrics, in combination with interviews, memorabilia, and correspondence from family descendants, reveals aspects of antebellum and post-Civil War life for their makers, and provides important documentation toward an understanding of South Carolina's quilt history.
