- Abstract
A study was carried out among 60 sample households to analyze the factors influencing the expenditure on milk and milk products in Chennai Metropolitan of Tamil Nadu. The selected households were classified on the basis of monthly family income, religion, food habits and education level of the head of the household. The data were analyzed by conventional average method and semi-log multiple linear regression method. The percentage expenditure on food items decreased with increase in the average monthly income per consumption unit and it was converse in the case of non-food items. The overall average expenditure on milk and milk products, food other than milk and milk products, and non-food items was 7.10%, 42.31%, and 50.58%, respectively. Out of the total expenditure on milk and milk products, the expenditure on fluid milk formed a greater proportion in all the income groups ranging from 52.88% to 74.90%. Among all milk products, the expenditure on curd and ghee was higher. The semi-log multiple linear regression model revealed that factors like family size, education level of the head of the household, food habits and monthly expenditure on non-food items had a significant influence on the expenditure on milk and milk products.
