- Title
The Empire Strikes Back: The People of Washington State Revisit the Death With Dignity Act.

- Abstract
The state of Washington is attempting to duplicate Oregon's Death with Dignity Act, and the proposed legislation has been placed on the 2008 ballot by initiative. There are numerous provisions in the Washington proposal, similar to those found in the Oregon Act, which attempt to protect both patient and provider. Data from the Oregon experience have generally shown a positive experience, without the slippery-slope fears becoming reality. Physician assistants (PAs) increasingly face patients with terminal illnesses and must resolve the often conflicting ideas of ethics, medicine, supervising physician mandates, and their own moral views on the topic. Studies show that PAs feel inadequately trained in end-of-life principles, and PA educators should review current curriculum to ensure sufficient education in this area.
