- Abstract
The article argues for the relevance of a gender focus on the construction of masculinities in the analysis of two models of defense against persistent violence in communities of Michoacán: the model of self-defense groups and the model proposed by the community of Cherán. After presenting the context in which studies of masculinities have been conducted —which situates masculinity within the problem of the creation of our relationality— the author problematizes the analysis of the discursive situation using two concepts: that of “war” and the subsequent “defense”, on the basis of a critique of the hegemonic idea of masculinity that is implied. He then points out the possibilities that open up with the construction of an alternative idea of masculinity in the proposal of relationality put forth by the community of Cherán. This article grew out of a presentation made at the 3rd Congress of Philosophy of Jalisco, held in February 2016
