- Title
Facilis hic futuit Graffiti and Masculinity in Pompeii's 'Purpose-Built' Brothel.
- Authors
LEVIN-RICHARDSON, SARAH
- Abstract
The article discusses how male clients individually and collectively negotiated male sexuality and how they created a hierarchy and solidified normative masculinity as opposed to nonnormative males and marginalized females. It notes how the graffiti of purpose-built brothel entered the scholarly arena as part of works devoted to analyzing erotic graffiti at Pompeii. It concludes that despite the low-status of male clients, they used the brothel and its graffiti as a competitive arena.
