- Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the adoption of technologies and organizational practices in the areas of Management, Feeding and Reproduction in dual-purpose cattle of the Mexican tropic territory. This study gathered a sample of 1650 farms of small size. The farms were divided in categories according with their level of adoption of technology and, subsequently, the effect of size and ecological zone was evaluated by a linear general model (LGM) with two factors. Lastly the best practices were compared inside each area by chi square test. The level of technological adoption in Feeding and Reproduction was very low (less than 30%), and medium in the Management area (52,2%). In the Management area, the technologies related with mechanical milking, grassland pastures, records and grassing in crop residues were scarce (P<0.05). There was a strong effect of scale in the technological level (P<0.001) and it was stronger in the dry tropic (P<0.001). In the Feeding area, the utilization of by-products, nutritional blocks, grains, molasses/urea and on-farm concentrate was very low. In Reproduction area, the effect of size was not significant while the effects of ecological zone and interactions were significant. In the wet tropic, the used technologies were low cost: semen evaluation, reproductive animals, mating, pregnancy diagnosis and estrous diagnosis.
