- Abstract
Given the changing epidemiology of IE and the ongoing opioid epidemic in the United States, we sought to better characterize trends in mortality rates from IE among young US residents and in relation to drug abuse. A causal relation between the worsening drug abuse epidemic and increasing IE mortality rates among the young can be supported by the fact that currently 2 of 10 young Americans who die of IE are PWID compared to 1 of 10 at the end of the prior century. Dear Editor, Infective endocarditis (IE) affects 40,000 to 50,000 patients in the United States per year and has 1-year average mortality of 30% that has remained largely unchanged in the last two decades despite advances in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies [[1]].
