- Abstract
In a letter to the editor of the Russian Review, Gary Saul Morson responds to Anthony Anemone's review of his book Wonder Confronts Certainty. Morson clarifies that Anemone misrepresents his views, such as attributing the book's hero to Solzhenitsyn instead of Chekhov. Morson also addresses Anemone's objections about the lack of historical context in the book, explaining that its purpose is not historical but to create a dialogue on ultimate questions. Morson refutes Anemone's claim that he is unimpressed by literary modernism and clarifies that he does not necessarily agree with the writers he quotes. He also denies Anemone's assertion that he is using his book to educate American progressives about the unintended consequences of good intentions. Morson concludes by expressing his appreciation for the importance of literature in understanding life.
