- Abstract
The article focuses on the relationship between organ pumpers and church organists and the evolution of the water motor which replaced human organ pumpers. Topics include the mention of water motor in the book "The Organ: Its History and Construction," by Edward J. Hopkins and Edward F. Rimbault, the introduction of the internal combustion engine for pumping organs by Backus Water Motor Co. in 1890s, and poet Thomas Hardy's poem on the relation between organ pumpers and organists.
