Legacies of Repression in Egypt and Tunisia: Authoritarianism, Political Mobilization, and Founding Elections by Alanna C. Torres‐Van Antwerp, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2022, xiii + 328 pp.
- Abstract
In this book, Alanna C. Torres-Van Antwerp highlights the important role authoritarian legacies play in shaping transition dynamics and outcomes after regime breakdown. What accounts for the opposition's decision to form political parties, their ability to quickly mobilize voters, and the chances of their survival after a founding election? Clientelism also fails to explain the Islamists' electoral success because it is a pervasive feature of parties in Egypt and almost impossible to capture empirically because parties themselves have an incentive to disguise it.
