Caregiver Education and Oral Health Outcomes in Dementia.
- Authors
Ferguson, Katherine A.
- Abstract
This article highlights the significance of caregiver education in improving oral health outcomes for individuals with dementia. The aging population in Canada, particularly those with dementia, face challenges in oral health care. Caregivers, whether family members or long-term care home staff, play a crucial role in providing oral care. However, they often lack knowledge, face time constraints, and have negative perceptions of oral care. While short-term studies have shown the effectiveness of caregiver education programs, more research is needed to understand their long-term impact. The article also emphasizes the lack of training and education for informal caregivers in long-term care homes, and suggests that educational intervention programs could be beneficial for caregivers of individuals with dementia.
