- Abstract
This article discusses about Preschool education in the U.S. The term preschool was used to compromise the whole period of infancy and early childhood, from birth to entrance into the elementary school. In the early years of history in dame school, children were expected to be able to read, and sometimes to write, when admitted to the town or other organized schools. Where the infant-school idea was strong, the kindergarten movement was slow. In the U.S., the absorption of the infant school into public school made possible the early spread of the kindergarten idea. The kindergarten movement is outlined in a pamphlet published by the Association for Childhood education.
