- Abstract
Enterococcus faecalis is a opportunistic pathogen known to form biofilms by producing virulent gene such as gelE. The aim of this study is to explore the presence of gelE and to examine its correlation to biofilm formation in the E. faecalis isolates from chicken origin. The samples used in this study were 60 samples of broiler cloacal swab archives. Isolation and bacteria were using a selective differential agar medium for KF Streptococcus. Molecular confirmation using the Efac specific gene for E. faecalis bacteria dan gelE gene for detection of gelatinase virulent gene. Biofilm test was carried out using a spectrophotometer technique at an optical density of 630 nm. Data were analyzed quantitatively using the chisquare test with P-value < 0,05, which is considered statistically significant. The isolation and identification results on 60 samples from chicken used in 21 isolates were positively confirmed as E. faecalis bacteria and detected had the gelE virulent gene. In the biofilm test, there were 20 isolates (95.23%) strongly positive (OD630 > 0.130) and 1 isolates (4.76%) weak positive (0.065 < OD630 ≤ 0.130) with P-value < 0.05 or correlate with the presence of the gelE gene and biofilm formation. It can be concluded that the virulent gelE gene was found in 21 isolates of E. faecalis, and 95.23% were able to form biofilms with strong positive intensity.
