- Abstract
In this article, we will re-interpret formative assessment as a process that promotes learning. Over the past decades, formative assessment has been re-examined, and recent research has shown that it not only helps trainers improve their teaching practices but it also helps students regulate their performance and learning by enabling them to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and thus monitor their learning process. Accordingly, we will refer to the convenience of using a student portfolio, a tool which promotes continuous assessment while fostering the development of student metacognition. We maintain that a student portfolio constitutes an assessment option that goes beyond the classic translation test, the only assessment tool normally used by trainers. Rubrics and scales as valuable tools to provide qualitative feedback will also be discussed.
