- Title
Sex determination: Birds do it with a Z gene.
- Authors
Graves, Jennifer A. Marshall
- Abstract
The article provides an overview of a study which found that doublesex and mab-3 related transcription factor 1 (DMRT1) could determine the sex of a bird. The study examined that when DMRT1 was tested to the credentials of a gene on the chicken Z chromosome, gonadz in ZZ embryos in which it had been successfully knocked down looked more like ovaries than testes. It investigated that feminization was demonstrated by examining the microscopic appearance of gonadal tissue disruption of testis cords. It noted that DMRT1 do its job by heading up the genetic pathway that directs testis-cord formation.
