Abstract
The author reflects on the 109th Christmas bird count, which is a yearly event involving bird-lovers who, on the day of their choosing, form teams and count all the birds they see. The author notes that the bird count, first proposed by the U.S. National Audubon Society in 1900, is the largest volunteer science project in the world. The author argues that such a volunteer science effort is a model to be emulated in which volunteers have fun while expanding human knowledge.
