- Abstract
The literature indicates the importance of supporting teachers during their internships, in their first year of work. But few studies have focused on mentor-intern relationships in kindergartens. Novice kindergarten teachers require guidance even more than novice school teachers do, as they typically work in independent institutions where physical and professional support from their peers is unavailable. This study describes and interprets the nature of the relationship between types of mentor support and aspects of professional well-being developed in novice kindergarten teachers. The study follows a qualitative approach. Data sources include semi structured interviews with ten kindergarten teacher interns and with ten mentoring kindergarten teachers, as well as transcripts from mentor-mentee meetings. Mentor support is conceptualized metaphorically as: "motherly caring," which enhances novices' sense of belonging and security; 'caring as a light house', which enhances motivation, and 'caring as an anchor', which enhances novices' sense of.
