- Abstract
This research paper examined the social responsibility roles of the broadcast media organisations in Nigeria, especially during election periods vis-à-vis the prevalent issues of vote-trading in the process of civic exercise by the electorates and the politicians. Agenda-setting theory is adopted to explain this research paper. Qualitative method was used to elicit information and materials used in the study. The study further highlights the broadcast media study approach on the menace towards proposing basis for empirical studies on vote buying. The paper also discussed deficiencies of broadcast media in the fight against election fraud and vote buying and selling. The reviewed sources include reference books, journals, newspapers, and other written materials linked to the issues. The paper concluded that as section of Nigeria's populace advocate for the total independence of the judiciary, the press or the media should also be supported to be independent to have the capability to carry out its mandates without the interference from the government in power. The appointment of INEC Chairman should be removed from the presidency and be the sole responsibility of a Non-Governmental Organisation in order to bring sanity to Nigeria's electoral process. The use of new technological equipment, in so many ways, could help curb the sharp electoral practices by Nigerian politicians.
