- Abstract
The book "Entangled Coercion in Charcas" by Paola A. Revilla Orías is discussed in the review. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the various forms of unfreedom in the provincial capital La Plata, Charcas (now Sucre, Bolivia) until the mid-17th century. Special attention is paid to the fate of enslaved Africans, Afro-descendants, and indigenous Chiriguano peoples. The book makes important contributions to Spanish colonial history, Latin American, Andean, and urban slavery, as well as gender, racialization, and social history. It is based on extensive archival work and offers new insights into under-researched topics in Andean social history. However, the English translation of the book has some editing issues. The research work "Coercion" and especially the Spanish edition of 2020 will be an important resource for scholars of global slavery. They will also be of interest to researchers studying vice-regal society, Afro-descendant and indigenous lifestyles, as well as constructions of gender, labor, and age. Due to Revilla's impressive archival research and his talent for qualitative and quantitative analysis, "Coercion" and especially the original edition "Coerciones" are expected to remain the standard references for decades on the vice-regal regimes of unfreedom in La Plata.
