- Abstract
The oro-maxillo-facial cleft is one of the most common congenital malformations globally and requires a long-term therapeutic approach, involving a multidisciplinary team of medical specialists. The priority after the surgical interventions is the management of dental tissues affected by dental caries. The aim of the study is to identify changes of the dental structure during teeth eruption, such as hypoplasia or enamel fluorosis, the number of carious lesions and the number of fillings in cleft patients and the possible predilection of certain regions in the oral cavity to developing an increased number of carious processes. We also aimed to highlight certain behavioral habits related to oral hygiene and nutrition or the lack of preventive practices that could lead to this increased susceptibility to dental caries. The results of the study showed that 64.9% of individuals with clefts have carious processes. The location of dental caries is both at the level of the lateral area and at the level of the frontal area. At the level of the maxillary arch, the largest number of carious processes were observed. 51% of all respondents had dental fillings, of which 52.9% had more than 4 fillings; 47.1% of fillings were located both in the frontal and lateral areas, 41.2% were identified only in the lateral area, and the remaining 11.8% were located only in the frontal area. Fillings were carried out with predilection for the maxillary arch (57.1%). 43.2% of the participants stated that they had dental structure changes, made of either white spots or roughness during teeth eruption on the dental arch; 64.9% use a manual brush for sanitation; 68% choose to use a toothpaste with fluoride; 13.5% received oral fluoride tablets; 29.7% of respondents rinse the oral cavity with mouthwash. Of the total number of participants, 22% use dental floss; 70.3% declare a frequency of brushing twice a day; 18.9% once a day in the evening; 8.1% once a day, in the morning; 2.7% choose to brush after every meal. In conclusion, less than half of the participants showed no changes in tooth structure when the teeth erupted on the arch. About two-thirds of cleft patients have carious processes and about half of them have fillings, both more common in the upper jaw. For the prevention of the occurrence of carious processes, most patients use fluoride toothpaste and brush twice a day. Some of them additionally use dental floss.
