- Abstract
Labial or labio-palatine clefts have major influences on the aesthetics, functionality and social integration of patients. Dental caries is a chronic process that can ultimately lead to tooth extraction and has a multifactorial etiology including the quality of hard dental tissues, the microbial factor, nutrition, the quantity and quality of saliva; hygiene techniques are playing an important role in prevention. A concern of medical research was to observe if there is a direct link between the presence of cleft lip and palate and the prevalence of caries. Studies in literature show that in the case of patients with clefts, the neighboring teeth are displaying structural abnormalities, especially enamel hypoplasia, the microflora of the oral cavity is modified due to the communication of the oral and nasal cavities, and the eating habits are different from those of healthy patients, with vicious eating habits. All these changes lead to a different prevalence of caries in those patients, versus healthy patients. The aim of this case presentation was to highlight the influence of cleft lip and palate on the prevalence of caries, in a patient with cleft lip and palate that underwent a complex dental treatment and to highlight the fact that such patients require a long-term, integrated, multidisciplinary approach involving surgical interventions and odontal, endodontic and prosthetic treatments. The case report suggests that dento-maxillary anomalies, in addition to the deficient structure of dental hard tissues and the modification of occlusion ratios, can increase the prevalence of carious processes. Conclusion: the patient with a cleft requires a complex odontal treatment, carioactivity being increased especially in the absence of appropriate hygiene techniques and means; still, at the end of the oral rehabilitation treatment, satisfactory aesthetic and functional results can be obtained.
