- Abstract
Status Epilepticus is a serious neurological emergency, whose duration of crises has a direct impact on the patient's prognosis. Therefore, rapid identification and adequate treatment are essential to avoid refractoriness and irreversible neurological damage. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the treatment offered to patients with status epilepticus, in a university hospital, in the interior of Paraná, Brazil. A cross-sectional and retrospective study was carried out, whose data were collected from the analysis of medical records of patients admitted to adult intensive care unit of the institution. Forty patients were selected, with phenytoin being the most used anticonvulsant, followed by phenobarbital, midazolam and diazepam. For all patients, it was necessary to prescribe an association of anticonvulsants. There was a high rate of refractoriness and mortality. In addition, in most cases where the reason for hospitalization was not related to a history of seizures or preexisting epilepsy, the number of deaths was higher, suggesting that the underlying etiology of status epilepticus was a relevant factor. The pharmacological treatment applied has not demonstrated good efficacy, and the continuous review of the protocols is an important tool in improving clinical outcomes.
