- Abstract
Introduction: Cervical cancer is a public health problem due to the high rates of incidence and mortality in Brazilian women. Quilombo communities have poor access to health services when compared to the general population. Objective: To detect cytological abnormalities in cervical smears of quilombo women in East coast municipalities in the state of Maranhão from July 2011 to March 2012, and analyse the quality indicators of cytopathology. Methods: The study included 382 women with ages between 15-75 years. The evaluation of quality of cytopathology cervical cancer was based on Internal Quality Monitoring indicators (IQM). Results: Of the 382 results of cytopathology, 92.4% (353/382) were considered satisfactory. The diagnoses were compatible with inflammation 92.9%, while 7.1% had cytological abnormalities. The positivity rate was 7.08%, the percentage of atypical squamous cells in satisfactory tests was 3.11%, the ratio of atypical squamous cells and squamous intraepithelial lesions was 0.78, and the percentage of tests compatible with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion was 2.26%. Conclusion: The results show higher prevalence of high-grade lesions, it is important to trace the uterine cervix cancer.
