- Abstract
It is a striking feature of German punctuation theory that it is heavily grounded on rules of grammar/syntax. However, ancient theory of punctuation is more based on elements of semantics and phonology. This article sketches the hypothesis that this transition from semantics/phonology to grammar/syntax is the consequence of a failed attempt to apply the ancient theory of punctuation to German texts: This attempt was not successful, because the German language differs greatly from Greek and Latin in regard of accentuating and quantifying syllables (as can be also observed in attempts to adapt ancient metrics to German).
