The article discusses how state authorities in New York struggled to control and influence local government in the state during America's early republic era, and it mentions various aspects of the powers and responsibilities of justices of the peace (JPs) during that time period. The judicial and administrative roles of JPs are addressed, as well as local magistracy, statutes, and party politics in the state of New York.
