- Abstract
The Japanese company Taisei Corporation has modified the genome of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 in a way that it produces fatty acids outside the cells. By removing a specific protein and improving export through the membrane, extracellular fatty acids can be obtained. The company Kao now possesses strains of Corynebacterium glutamicum that produce gallic acid or 4-amino-3-hydroxybenzoic acid. Through the development of new metabolic pathways and the optimization of enzymes, Kao aims to unlock synthetic pathways that do not exist in nature. The Japanese flavor manufacturer Ajinomoto and the National Institute for Basic Biology have developed a method for large-scale production of RNA pesticides that inhibit the growth of pests. These pesticides consist of double-stranded RNA that blocks the production of essential proteins. The Japanese Chitose Group cultivates Chlamydomonas algae in Kuching, Borneo, from which oil can be extracted. The algae oil can be processed into aviation fuel, and the group plans to expand the facility by 2030.
