- Abstract
The tobacco industry promotes tobacco heaters as a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarettes. Companies like Philip Morris, British American Tobacco, and Japan Tobacco International use slogans such as "No fire, no ash" and "Heat, not burn." Measurements by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment show that the aerosol from tobacco heaters contains fewer carcinogenic and toxic substances than cigarette smoke. However, there are also other harmful substances in the aerosol that are not on the list of health-damaging components. There are no long-term studies on the health effects of tobacco heaters yet, but biomarker studies suggest that some values are positive in consumers of tobacco heaters. The tobacco industry selectively publishes data on tobacco heaters and tries to prevent strict regulations.
