- Abstract
The subject of this article is the text published in 1930 by Gustaf Raquette based on the document in the Jarring collection of Lund University regarding the Yarkent khan Yulbars Khan’s legal document written 1073 AH (1662 CE). The study critically evaluates and conducts a re-reading of Raquette’s work, which had been transferred to the Arabic transcription alphabet, and of the German translation of the text and the related footnotes. This study involves the manuscript copies at Houghton Library registered under MS Turk 70 Doc. 11/2. The study has conducted a comparative reading of the text in order to critically approach the philological text of this document. This has been done because academic studies on Turkish language, history, and culture have cited Raquette’s publication on the document belonging to Yulbars Khan as a reference, with certain evaluations having been made based on the pertinent data therein. As a result, having this study of the history of the Yarkent Khanate, as well as the histography and diplomacy of the Khanate, be reviewed and brought to Turcology studies is seen to be academically essential in light of the new document we have obtained so as to prevent any wrong or incomplete evaluations that have occurred regarding the language and sociocultural life of the region and period. For this reason, the article philologically compares Raquette’s publication with the Harvard copy of the document, identifies and individually classifies the presence of reading errors and differences between the two, and makes explanations as needed
