- Abstract
The ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an artificial opening from an area inside the body to the outside for the elimination of bodily wastes. The aim of this study was to define epidemiological aspects of users of Care Program for Ostomized Patients (CPOP). Th e CPOP has as objective to help in the postoperative treatment of people with a colostomy, ileostomy and urostomy, ensuring human resources (interdisciplinary team composed of nurses, nurse assistant, doctor, social worker, psychologist and dietician) and materials (an ostomy pouching system). 16 individuals registered in the CPOP, both genders, with ostomy, were analyzed. The analysis tool was a semi-structured interview applied during the CPOP meetings and in some users' residence. For data analysis we used descriptive statistics to calculate the mean, standard deviation and percentage. The results showed changes in the way of life of the ostomized patients, the importance of professional nursing care as a member of the multidisciplinary team of CPOP and user satisfaction with care given, as well as the importance that this program has in the ostomized patients' life. We concluded that health professionals, mainly nurses, should promote the integration of the ostomized patient encouraging him/her to have an active social life, even with restrictions.
