The article discusses origin and reach of jazz across the world highlighting the history of the music genre. Topics discussed include gathering of enslaved people in 1780s to drum, sing and dance at Congo Square in New Orleans, marching bands that toured the nation exposing musician to regional rhythms and melodies after the Civil War and migration of musicians to northern cities such as New York and Chicago.
