- Abstract
Turkey is known as a centre of different kinds of fruits' origins in worldwide. Chestnut is one of the fruit types which are adapted to the ecological conditions in our country. Chestnut tree, a natural forest tree has intensity in the regions of the Black Sea, Marmara and Aegean, and its entire production demand is met by these regions. Chestnut production in Turkey which is in the third order in the world by coming after China and South Korea has decreased dramatically compared to the 1990s. It is certain that this situation is the result of fatal diseases such as ink disease and chestnut branch cancer. In addition, if the studies about struggle with these diseases become successful in our country which is the biggest producer in Europe, it is inevitable that the production will increase. In chestnut production, the main aim is to set gardens with grafted seedlings. The production in Turkey is made both with grafted trees and without grafted trees in the forests. In this case, the necessary development in the production both in quality and quantity aspects could not be achieved. For this reason, extending the gardens enriched with the high-quality types which are found with selection way, have high quality and yield will be an important development for the chestnut farming.
