- Abstract
Pochampally handloom saris are most popular among Indian women irrespective of different age groups. In fact, handloom products from this area are highly sought after by consumers in India and abroad, owing to the uniqueness in Pochampally design and of course its fine quality. Unfortunately things are not going smooth for the weavers of Pochampally community. Subsistence living, mounting debts, lack of proper support from the stakeholders, delayed payments - driving these artisans to commit suicides or search for alternative livelihoods. Though Pochampally products are unique, middlemen marketing them are hoarding a large share of profits to be enjoyed by the actual producers. The present paper focuses on the basic problems of rural weavers in continuing with this profession and possible alternatives to improve their socio-economic conditions.
