- Abstract
Jobst of Helfenberg was born around 1388 and was a member of the Helfenbergs, a lower nobility family (knights) from Lower Styria. The Helfenberg family, named after Helfenberg Castle near Velenje, were originally likely ministeriales of the Bishops of Gurk. They were primarily a part of the nobility from the Savinja region, but were later made a part of the Styrian nobility with the gradual incorporation of the Savinja region into Styria after 1311. The Untermarschall of Styria, Jobst of Helfenberg, was the most prominent member of this family and was an important liege subject of the Counts of Celje whom he served for several decades. Popular tradition holds that he was also Veronika of Desenice's executioner, however, that could not (yet) be proven.
