Indian horse racing has long been an important part of Indian society. Ute horse races were usually run on a linear track up to about a mile in length. In the absence of a starting gate, races were begun using the "wheel and run" approach. Races were often attended by hundreds, if not thousands, of spectators. Bets were placed alongside the race course. The bets were often excessive, with the status of precious ponies and even wives dependent on the outcome.
