- Abstract
Implementing innovative active learning practices in higher education has been seen as crucial for students' academic and professional success in today's world. In this context, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are facing new challenges and have to shift the educational paradigm from the traditional teachercentred towards student-centred learning. There is evidence in the literature that active learning methodologies improve students' learning outcomes and performance. However, there are few studies that have empirically investigated this relationship and that provide a comparison of the effects in different areas of education. The aim of this paper is to explore the students' perceptions of implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach as an active learning practice in both the social sciences and engineering education fields. The study was carried out within the context of a Portuguese Polytechnic Higher Education Institution-the Polytechnic University of Coimbra, based on a survey research methodological approach which involved a sample of 97 undergraduate students. Overall, empirical results support the idea that innovative active learning methodologies constitute an effective approach to enhance students' engagement, learning experience, and competences. This positive effect of active learning practices on students' performance is more evident in engineering education compared to social sciences. These findings support the idea that HEIs need to change their teaching-learning environment towards innovative learning practices, more in line with the challenges of the twenty-first century.
