- Abstract
The article focuses on Sir John Fleming Leicester's patronage of British art. He is said to be the most famous and distinguished of all the patrons and collectors of British art in the early nineteenth century. By the time he died in 1827, Leicester had collected well over 100 works of art by British artists. His acquisition of pictures was made in various ways, including direct purchases from artists, sales by auction, and though other collectors. Leicester's patronage was not necessarily confined to commissioning and purchasing pictures, but often extended to inviting and entertaining his favourite artists to his country seat at Tabley in Cheshire, England.
