Thomas Gainsborough RA: Pastoral pleasure and the Showbox.
- Authors
Wilson, David
- Abstract
The article discusses the Showbox of the English painter Thomas Gainsborough. It relates that Gainsborough created his Showbox, which is a miniature theatre for the display of paintings accompanied by lighting and music, in the early 1780s, partly inspired by Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg. The Showbox was a magnifying device consisting of a wooden box with a moveable lens capable of enlarging the image but also making it appears more distant. Candles were used to illuminate the image from behind the painted landscape by enhancing the light and atmospheric effects.
