- Abstract
The article focuses on a group portrait by William Hogarth which is thought to depict Catherine Darnley, Duchess of Buckingham at Buckingham House in London, England, around 1736, with two ladies of her family or close acquaintance. When the picture first surfaced in 1832, in the collection of John Homes, Esquire of Wilton Street, it was described in some detail, but as a conversation piece featuring three unknown ladies. This group of three ladies is in a grand interior, with two spaniels, one of whom is carrying off a fan.
