- Title
Recent developments in the UK economy: the economics of walking about.
- Abstract
In this speech, Professor David Blanchflower, member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), describes the important role empirical data should play when analysing the UK economy. He considers five questions that the latest data pose for economic theory, covering the labour market, firms' pricing decisions and the relationship between money growth and inflation. He concludes that ‘walking about’ and listening to the views of individuals and companies is important for any economist seeking to understand what is really happening in the economy at any point in time, and invaluable when setting interest rates.
