The author focuses on the effects of consumerism on folk music of pre-industrial cultures. He argues that consumer society has killed tradition and culture that are reflected in folk music, now called as "roots" music, because of its process of always seeking for newness. Despite this trend, the author contends that there are evidences of a return of spirituality and the recognition of the centrality of culture that are reflected in music.
