- Title
The Fiddler's Heritage at Pangnirtung.
- Authors
Bennett, John
- Abstract
The article discusses the fiddler's heritage in Pangnirtung, Cumberland Sound, Baffin Island, Nunavut. It notes that the folk tradition of the Inuit, which included the playing of jigs and reels, was first played on the fiddle by Scottish whalers. It points out that although there are fiddle players in some Inuit communities, the fiddle has not been played much in Pangnirtung. It indicates that radio and television allowed an expansion of Inuit music and the possibility of producing a fiddler equal to those who played for whaling station dances.
