Basilicas enjoy their own discipline both in canon law and in ecclesiastical law. A church can be considered basilica, major or minor, by immemorial custom or by conferral of the title by the ecclesiastical authority. A careful analysis of the current legislation, which also considers the legislative evolution that has taken place on the matter, allows us to understand the ratio that led the Legislator to make specific provisions on this type of sacred places, which represent further occasions of grace whereby the faithful may receive the necessary spiritual help, for the benefit of the salus animarum.
