- Abstract
The article focuses on ways that countries in the Asia-Pacific region are building their defensive capabilities through acquiring naval aircraft carriers. Up to 18 ships capable of carrying aircraft have been ordered or have been put into operation by China, Japan, India, Australia, and Thailand. The author discusses the costs and manufacturing of aircraft carriers and their use in military operations. Other topics include tensions between Japan, China, and South Korea, Japan's constitution that prohibits the nation from having an offensive military capability, and Chinese manufacturing of aircraft carriers.
