- Abstract
The article discusses some of the challenges faced by women who attempt to bear and raise children while pursuing academic careers. Examples are drawn from the authors' personal experiences as members of the Communications Department at the University of Missouri, during one academic year when more than a third of the department's faculty members became pregnant. Conflicts between professional academic duties and the demands of pregnancy and motherhood are discussed from feminist, sociological and philosophical perspectives.
