The article illustrates the mechanisms of bacterial secretion by the autotransporter system and the role of these secreted proteins in virulence. Autotransporters consist of three domains referring to an N-terminal signal peptide, a C-terminal translocator and a passenger domain. Previous studies have proposed two distinct models for the protein-translocation process.
