- Abstract
"A Ritual Geology: Gold and Subterranean Knowledge in Savanna West Africa" by Robyn D'Avignon challenges the dichotomy between industrialized and artisanal gold mining in West Africa. The book explores the history of gold mining in the region, highlighting the contributions of Africans to the industry. D'Avignon argues that African miners played a significant role in the scientific knowledge used by industrial mines. The book also examines the impact of mining on African communities and questions the morality of granting corporate mining companies the right to destroy traditional ways of life. This study provides valuable insights for researchers interested in the history of science and technology, environmental history, and decolonization studies in Africa and the Global South.
